Emergency Steps

We understand that your situation may very well be chaotic in a pet emergency. If possible, please bring your pet’s medications, medical records, or packaging to anything your pet may have accidentally ingested, . These will help tremendously in our ability to begin a proper treatment plan.

Triage will determine if there are any life-threatening problems that require immediate attention. Our receptionist will ask you a few quick questions and a technician will then examine your pet. If an emergency problem is found, the technician will take your pet to the treatment area for immediate examination and assessment by our Veterinarian. Our Veterinarian will quickly assess the situation and come to the exam room to talk with you about what treatment is required.

We know that this can be a stressful time and that you may be required to make decisions very quickly. We also appreciate your patience and understanding if another patient is found to need attention before yours even though you may have arrived first. We know your time is valuable and will do everything possible to address your situation as quickly as we can.

If you have any concerns about your pet while waiting to the see the veterinarian, please speak to our receptionist – don’t sit and worry that things are deteriorating.

Every effort is made to discuss fees prior to and during treatment and hospitalization.

The expenses associated with emergency and specialized medical care are often a concern for families. Our goal is to provide you with an accurate treatment plan and financial estimate before beginning treatment. Due to the nature of some medical conditions however, it is not always possible to precisely predict the outcome or associated costs. If substantial deviation from the treatment plan becomes necessary, you will be informed by our staff and a new estimate of costs will be presented to you before new or additional measures are implemented.

Though every effort is always made to remain cost efficient in times of a pet emergency, we abide by OVMA guidelines for the cost of services rendered with a pet.VETS Toronto will always discuss treatment plans prior to emergency care to assist our clients with calculation of their expected bill.

Prices reflect the costs of expertise, time, drugs, equipment and consumables involved, plus other overhead built in, to be able to provide a consistently high service standard.

We also require clients to pay a 50% deposit BEFORE their pet is admitted to hospital so that they are actually considering the possible costs at what can be a stressful time for pet parents.

Balance due on account must be paid in full at time of pet discharge.

Due to the high overhead costs associated with operating a 24-hour hospital, VETS Toronto emergency costs may be higher than those you experience at your regular veterinary office.

VETS Toronto believe in building and maintaining TRUST between ourselves and our clients, and this is so clearly illustrated when clients are leaving their pet with us for surgery or in clinic hospital treatment. The anxiety for clients is something we cannot eliminate altogether as that is part of the loving relationship you share with your pet; but we do try to do everything we possibly can to minimize your worries and concerns.

Many pet parents request to leave articles of clothing, blankets, towels etc.  We ask you take these belongings home with you, however, we do have our Snuggle Box.  We know it’s difficult to leave your pet kids over night.  To make it easier on you and them, we encourage you to pick a stuffed animal from our snuggle box in reception, give it a snuggle to leave your scent and love on it.  VETS Toronto will ensure the stuffed animal follows your pet during their stay with us.

Please discuss visitations with our staff. While we try to accommodate visitation requests and visits are often good for the pet, in some cases, a visit may interrupt treatment or be overly stressful and may not be in your pet’s best interest.  Visitation must always be booked in advance, so please speak with our receptionist to book a convenient time. 416.690.0625

When your pet kid is ready to go home, you will meet with our Veterinarian to review discharge instructions and a Technician will explain medications prescribed. We will forward all medical records associated with your pets stay or visit to your general practice Veterinarian. VETS Toronto will follow up with a call a couple days after discharge to ensure nothing has changed with the healing process and answer any further questions you may have.

We always suggest a recheck, which is of no charge to you, about 1 week after discharge.

Balance due on account must be paid in full at time of discharge
